A COA showing 99%+ purity is only useful if it belongs to the exact product and batch in front of you. Knowing how to verify COA authenticity means looking beyond a polished PDF, a QR code, or a single purity number. The document must create a traceable line between the item, the tested lot, the laboratory, the analytical method, and the reported result.
For research-use-only products, that distinction matters. A legitimate certificate of analysis supports purchasing confidence and batch-level quality review. It does not convert a research product into a pharmaceutical product, establish suitability for human use, or replace independent research controls.
Start With the Lot Number
The lot number is the fastest and most practical verification point. A COA should identify a specific batch, not merely a generic compound name such as BPC-157, NAD+, or GHK-Cu. Check whether the lot or batch number on the certificate matches the number on the product label, carton, or accompanying product documentation.

The report should make it possible to understand what was measured. A result labeled simply “Pass” provides less usable information than a report showing the method, specification, actual result, units, and acceptance criteria. For example, a stated purity result of 99.3% is more meaningful when paired with the analytical method and a clear product or sample identifier.
Review whether the testing matches the claim being made. Identity, purity, residual solvents, microbial screening, endotoxin, heavy metals, and moisture are distinct analyses. A purity assay does not prove the absence of heavy metals. A heavy-metal screen does not establish peptide identity. If a product page emphasizes contaminant screening, the supporting records should identify the relevant test category and result.
This is where context matters. Not every material requires the same analytical panel, and not every format presents the same concerns. A lyophilized research peptide, capsule, liquid spray, topical, and hydration product may require different methods and specifications. The standard is not that every COA looks identical. The standard is that the testing is relevant, identified, and traceable.
Check Dates, Product Names, and Stated Strength
Dates help reveal whether a COA is tied to current operations. Review the sample receipt date, test date, report issue date, and any retest or expiration information. An older report may still be valid for the batch it describes, but it should not be presented as proof for a newer lot without a documented connection.

These are not definitive proof of alteration, but several discrepancies together deserve escalation.
Also compare multiple COAs from the same seller when available. Reused test results across supposedly different lots, identical report dates across a large catalog, or the same chromatogram attached to unrelated products can indicate that documentation is being recycled. Legitimate analytical reports may share a layout, but batch-specific fields and results should change.
